The Great Recession hit hard and shook up the world’s spirit.
When things looked grim and hopeless, dougieluv took a stand to make a difference. This beloved Canadian artist, comedian, filmmaker and entrepreneur went in search of a common link that brings joy to people of all ages, backgrounds, and economic conditions.
Could a humble hot dog be that link?
Armed with an idea and a vision, dougie gathered his crew and piled into a 1988 Dodge Caravan on a quest to investigate the hot dog phenomenon: why does everyone love hot dogs? On a venture across America, dougie and his team documented their discoveries on film.
The hot dog frenzie was immediately sparked by the dougiedog crew’s first real All- American hot dog experience in California. This event drove them to stop for anything hot dog related during their journey from coast to coast. Along the way, they met many hot dog enthusiasts, dined at amazing hot dog joints, and interviewed the hottest hot dog-loving celebrities.
When dougie crossed the Mid-West and pulled up in Chicago, the self-proclaimed “hot dog capital”, he discovered a deeply rooted hot dog culture that is rich in history and founded on loyalty. At that point, there was no doubt that the humble hot dog unites Americans.
There was also no turning back.
The crew pressed onward towards New York City, the hot dog’s birthplace. Stopping at every opportunity to experience more hot dogs and to capture film footage, the dougiedog crew hit up more hot dog restaurants, stands, and events. Traveling in style, they even gained backstage access to document Nathan’s famous Hot Dog Eating Contest on Coney Island.
After visiting over 65 hot dog restaurants and meeting hundreds of fellow hot dog lovers, dougie finally understood why the hot dog is an American institution. Inspired by the diverse stories, people, and cultures he encountered in his journey, he decided to bring this enthusiasm back home at this critical moment in history.
